There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the border from nearby Thailand, where casino wagering is not allowed. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent location, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; however, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 1700, and although visas are allegedly required to pass, there are ways around this, as is real of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling hall, highlights one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of 150 slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international vacation and hotel complex that contains numerous luxuries on top of the casino, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and 88 gaming tables.
